Some Career/Major help, please?
Here’s a few things I’m particularly good at:
- Organization
- People skills
- Computers (I’m very Photoshop literate and I’ve used a lot of different programs and tools.)
- Illustration mediums (including most dry mediums and watercolor)
My passions include art and creativity. I’ve been a web designer at a medium sized firm for about three years now, but the work isn’t as creative as I wish it’d be. I would like to be involved with something more creative that allowed me to flex my artistic ability a bit more than "that logo looks wrong. fix it."
I’m hoping to find something that combines art and technology, but my main concern is stability of course. Is there any career in the art field that is stable? Well, stable by today’s standards at least. And what degree would be useful for this career?
Earning an associate degree in information can lead to a rewarding career. Those with this degree can obtain employment as computer specialists, webmasters, network architects or other computer professionals. Obtaining an associate in information technology can take up to two years. This degree is offered at most technical and community colleges, and provides the skills necessary to maintain computer systems.
Computer Support Specialists
Computer support specialists may be employed by government agencies, schools or other agencies that require computer services. The specialist assists others in the use of computer applications, and troubleshoots hardware and software issues. Those employed in this field may assist customers by phone, in person or via email. The specialist may also assist customers in taking steps to resolve issues on their computer. Some specialists conduct training classes to teach customers how to use software installed on their computers. Computer specialists may be prone to eye, neck and back strain, as a result of prolonged sitting in front of a computer. Many employers require the specialist to be on-call in the event of an emergency. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, computer specialists earned a median wage of $46,370 in May 2008.
Webmaster
Webmasters are responsible for maintaining a company website. They may test websites to ensure the site is accessible to customers. Testing can include downloading sample files or testing links. Webmasters must have good communication skills, because they interact with software engineers, technical writers and designers to determine the company’s website layout. The webmaster must also be familiar with HyperText Markup Language (HTML) code, which is used to make websites. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, webmasters earned an annual salary of $73,830 in May 2008.
Network Architect
Most network architect positions can be obtained after receiving an associate degree in information technology. To advance into management, you should obtain a four-year degree. Network architects design computer networks and ensure the company’s network is stable. They are also responsible for setting up the hardware connecting the network. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, those in this field can earn up to $70,000 each year.
